Portland First Weekly News

January 8, 2019

Dear PDX First family,
Welcome to 2019!  It's a new year with new possibilities and opportunities.  Oh, there will be obstacles and challenges as well, but I’m excited to see how God shows up and works out His will in the life of our faith community in the coming year.
I wanted to take a moment here at the first of the year to tell you about a couple of new environments for you to take advantage of in 2019.
First is something we are calling Coffee with the Pastor.  Periodically each month Dee and I will be meeting up at a coffee shop around the Portland Metro area and we would like to invite you to stop by and share a cup of coffee with us, have a conversation about the previous Sunday’s message, the future of the church, or simply catch up.  We would love it if you would stop by and share a cup of coffee with us!  Here’s the location of the first few Coffee with the Pastor meet ups:
  • Southside on January 15th, 10:00am — 11:30 am @ Lionheart Coffee Company, 11421 SW Scholls Ferry Rd, Beaverton, OR 97008
  • Eastside on January 29th, 10:00am — 11:30 am @ Jet Black Coffee Company, 11150 NE Weidler St, Portland, OR 97220
  • Westside on February 5th, 10:00am — 11:30 am @ Insomnia Coffee Company, 2388 NW Amberbrook Dr, Beaverton, OR 97006
Secondly, we are excited to announce an offsite, mid-week discipleship opportunity for kids and adults.  As we enter into the new year, we want to provide an environment where we can go deeper as a community of faith in our commitment to follow Jesus.  We recognize that Sunday morning simply is not enough for us to accomplish this.  We also recognize that traffic on Hwy. 26 near our campus creates a significant challenge for many of you.  Therefore, we have partnered with Lionheart Coffee Company on Scholls Ferry to offer an alternative location for those who want to grow deeper.
On Wednesday, January 23rd @ 6:30 PM we will kickoff our first six-week session of the Experiencing God bible study.  Dee and I have been doing this bible study together and it has been nothing short of transformational.  One of the things we are most excited about is the Experiencing God environment for kids.  Amy Gillilan, our Director of Children’s Ministry, will be leading our kids through the seven realities of Experiencing God, and the kids will go home with an activity book packed with fun games and activities designed to show your kids how they can discover and join God in His work.
Space for this study is limited to 25 adults and ten kids, so please reserve your spot and workbook today. Please register here The cost of the adult workbook is $16.  Kids activity books will be provided for free.
Several months ago we introduced prayer partners to our Sunday morning worship gatherings, because we believe that praying together is central to who we are as a community of faith.  You have probably noticed that we have experimented with when and where the prayer partners are used in the worship service.
While we will continue to try new things in the future, we have decided that for this current season in the life of our church we are going to be utilizing prayer partners at the conclusion of our worship service.  The reason for this decision is to provide extended time and space for prayer, counseling, and encouragement to those who need it.  Many people hesitate to come forward for prayer during the worship service because they don’t want to feel like they are the center of attention.  Our hope and prayer is that providing this opportunity at the conclusion of the service will give them greater freedom to come and receive the prayer that we all so desperately need.
Therefore, you will likely hear me give an invitation at the conclusion of each service to come forward for prayer and I would encourage you to make use of our prayer partners yourself.  These men and women love you, pray for you throughout the week, and would love the opportunity to minister to you each week.
God has great things in-store for us in 2019 as we seek to follow Him.
Grace and peace!
Brandin Melton
Lead Pastor, PDX First

Online giving is an easy and convenient way for so many of us to give, but some services are not as cost-effective for the church as others.  For that reason, the church will no longer be using Push Pay and is switching to Church Center.
The Church Center is very user-friendly and easy to set up.  Just search for "My Church Center" in your app store and follow the simple instructions to get started today.
Thank You
Many thanks for the generosity of our PDXFirst community in donating Fred Meyer/Target gift cards for the Sylvan school totaling $1,015.  This exceeds our goal of $1,000 and surpasses the past two years in donations. These gift cards are going to help the counselors at west Sylvan Middle School. They'll use them to provide care and help throughout the year to the students in our community.

Attention Ladies Book Group members and anyone interested in joining us. Our next book discussion will begin at 6:30 PM in room 302 tonight, January 8th.
Men, be sure to mark your calendar for the next Men’s Breakfast. It takes place on January 12th at 9:00 AM. This time we will be joining together at Terry Mostul’s shop, Artistic Autobody in Tigard. The morning will include breakfast, a tour of the shop, and a short devotional message. We hope that you will invite and bring your coworker, a friend, or your son. We are looking forward to a great time together and don’t want to miss connecting with you.
Women's Strength
January 16 - 11:30 am - Fireside Room - $5 donation
Living in our unpredictable world, it is good to know that we can be prepared to protect ourselves and those we love in an unexpected, less-than-safe situation. We have invited Sara Johnson, the director of the Portland Police Bureau, Family Services Division, to conduct a “Women’s Strength” workshop focusing on prevention strategies, recognizing when you are being targeted, and the various options for ending an attack.
This is a great opportunity to invite friends and family to hear this vital information.
We’re having a light bite luncheon of salad and beverages. A $5 donation will be
welcome. You may sign up at Guest Services.

Student Ministries
Teens don’t forget that we are in our series “Questioning Jesus”. This week we will be looking at two questions that Jesus asked that are closely related, “What are you looking for” and “Who are you looking for?”. These two questions lead into the question that one of you have asked, “How do I grow closer to God.” I hope you can join us at 5 PM at our house for a time of fellowship, worship, teaching and discussion. If you have a question that you would like to ask please email or DM Pastor Robb.
NYC Participants and Parents
NYC Parents and Teens. Don’t forget that immediately following the morning service we have a brief meeting to discuss fundraising ideas and options. One idea we need to decide on is running concessions on Saturdays during the Flash Basketball league. We also need to determine what other items we would like to do over the next several months as we prepare for NYC. Please plan on meeting in the fireside room. We will do what we can to keep this meeting limited to 30 minutes.

Join us at 7:00 pm for discussion and fellowship at the home of Robb and Amy Gossen.
